Passion fruit: a unique personality!
14 December 2023
Native to Brazil, the passion fruit was discovered at the end of the 16th century by the first Spanish missionaries. The Indians were already growing it for food, but also for medicinal purposes. The fruit was subsequently introduced to Central America, Asia, Africa and the West Indies.
Slightly tart, passion fruit is one of the most loved and sought-after tropical fruits. It is a tropical berry derived from the pomegranate, a climbing vine native to South America, the Passiflora. Passion fruit belongs to the Passifloraceae family. It is good for your health, containing lots of antioxidants and fibre. The flesh is soft, juicy, yellow and contains many crunchy seeds. The best way to eat passion fruit is to choose a ripe, fairly heavy fruit with a slightly wrinkled skin.
It can be eaten plain, halved and spooned out, but also adds a delicate flavour to mousses, sorbets and jams. In a fruit salad or in juice, it’s sure to add an exotic touch to your day.
